1. Choose the room and game
For a first casino session, a standard low-stakes Hold’em cash game is easier to understand operationally than jumping into a tournament or unfamiliar Omaha structure.
2. Bring valid ID
Ontario casino entry requires age verification. Venue-specific ID rules can be stricter than simply “bring a driver's licence,” so check the casino before travelling.
3. Join the list
Poker rooms often use a desk, pager, app or phone list. Joining a list does not buy you a seat; it establishes your place in the queue.
4. Buy chips and sit down
Ask the floor or dealer if you are unsure where to buy chips, what the minimum buy-in is, or whether you need to post a blind immediately.
5. Protect your hand and act in turn
Do not expose cards, discuss a live multiway hand, or act before the player ahead of you. Keep larger denomination chips visible and make verbal declarations clearly.
6. Phones and headphones
Room rules vary. Great Canadian Toronto currently prohibits phone/electronic communication use while a player has a live hand and prohibits recording unless authorized.
7. Leave whenever you want
A cash-game session is not a commitment to stay. If you are tired, tilted, uncomfortable or at your loss limit, rack up and leave.
