Ontario has its own regulated online gambling market, and poker is part of it. If you're 19 or older and physically in the province, you can play real-money poker on sites that iGaming Ontario lists. The rest of Canada works differently, so none of this is a national rulebook.

How Ontario's regulated market works
Ontario runs a competitive private iGaming market. Two public bodies are involved, and it helps to know which does what:
| Body | What it does |
|---|---|
| AGCO (Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario) | Registers internet-gaming operators and sets the standards they must follow, including advertising rules. |
| iGaming Ontario | Conducts and manages the competitive market and publishes the public directory of regulated operators and sites. |
An operator needs an AGCO registration and, except for OLG, an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario. When a poker brand appears in iGaming Ontario's directory, that's the signal that it's part of the regulated market.
For you as a player, the practical rules are short:
- You must be 19 or older. Expect to verify your identity when you open an account.
- You must be physically in Ontario when you play. Regulated sites use geolocation. Living in Toronto doesn't help if you're logging in from a hotel in Montreal.
- Advertising is restricted. Ontario limits broad public advertising of bonuses, credits and other gambling inducements. That's why you won't see bonus tables here, and why a loud promotion tells you nothing about whether a site is regulated.

Brands listed for poker (as of September 1, 2026)
As of the 1 September 2026 iGaming Ontario listing, poker is marked for six brands:
| Brand | Operator listing |
|---|---|
| BetMGM Poker | BetMGM Canada Inc. |
| Bwin | ElectraWorks Maple Limited |
| PartyPoker | ElectraWorks Maple Limited |
| FanDuel Poker | FanDuel Canada ULC |
| GGPoker | NSUS Limited |
| 888 Poker | VHL Ontario Limited |
Bwin and PartyPoker are listed under the same operator, ElectraWorks Maple Limited. So six brands doesn't mean six separate companies. It's five operators.
This is a dated snapshot. Brands join, leave and rename, and the official directory wins if it ever disagrees with our table. The detailed version, with the directory categories for each brand, is on Ontario-regulated poker sites.
How to check a poker site is regulated in Ontario
It takes about two minutes, and you should do it before any deposit:
- Open the regulator's directory. Go to iGaming Ontario's operator list and find the brand by name. Not a review site, not a search ad.
- Match the brand, not just the company. A company can run several brands. Make sure the exact brand you're signing up with is on the list.
- Confirm you'll play from inside Ontario. Geolocation is part of the market design. If you're heading to a cottage in Quebec, assume your account won't let you play there.
- Ignore bonus leaderboards. A headline offer isn't a regulatory status, and it isn't a traffic report either.
Comparing the poker product
Once a brand passes the directory check, you're choosing a poker room like any other. A casino brand with a poker tab isn't automatically a busy poker site. Things to look at:
- Cash games. Which stakes are actually running when you usually play? Log in at 9 p.m. on a Tuesday and look, rather than trusting a lobby screenshot.
- Tournaments. Check the daily schedule, the buy-in range and the guarantees you'd realistically enter.
- Software. Does the mobile app work well? Can you set the table view and bet-sizing buttons the way you like?
- Payments. What deposit and withdrawal methods are offered, and how long do cashouts take?
- Limit tools. Deposit limits, session reminders and time-outs. Set them before your first session, not after a bad one.
Studying helps more than any site choice. Our poker lessons cover preflop strategy, pot odds and cash vs tournament play, and the pot odds calculator is handy for reviewing hands.
What's different in the rest of Canada
Ontario's open, privately operated market isn't the national model. Other provinces use different systems, and the options available to you depend on the province you're physically in. We don't publish a province-by-province list, so if you're outside Ontario, check your own province's gaming regulator or lottery corporation for what's approved there.
Two things are safe to say. The Ontario brand list isn't your local list if you're in another province. And a site that says it's "available to Canadians" hasn't told you whether it's regulated in Ontario or anywhere else.
Online vs live poker
Online poker and live casino poker are two separate decisions, and each is checked through its own source. Online you'll see far more hands an hour and much smaller stakes, which makes it a cheap way to practise. Live, the lowest cash games usually start around $1/$2 or $1/$3, the pace is slow and the reads are physical. Plenty of Toronto players do both: a few online sessions during the week, and a night at a casino room on the weekend. For the live side, start with live poker in Toronto.
