Is online poker legal in Canada?
There's no single national answer, and that's why people get confused. Canada doesn't run online gambling from one rulebook. Each province has its own approach, and Ontario's regulated private market is its own system.
So the useful question is: is online poker legal where you are right now? If you're in Ontario, the answer above applies. If you're in another province, the rules of that province apply, and the Ontario list of brands isn't your list.
Two things follow from that. A brand authorized in Ontario isn't automatically authorized everywhere in the country. And a site that accepts Canadians from another province isn't automatically an Ontario-regulated poker room.
What "legal in Ontario" actually means
Ontario runs a competitive private iGaming market. Operators need an AGCO registration and, except for OLG, an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario. Poker offered inside that market is what we're talking about when we say "legal in Ontario".
In practice, you can tell whether a brand is in the market by checking one place: the iGaming Ontario operator directory.
The two rules players miss

Here's how the location rule plays out. You live in Etobicoke and play a nightly tournament on a regulated site. Friday you drive to Ottawa, then cross into Gatineau for dinner. On the Ontario side, you're inside the market. On the Quebec side, you aren't, even though nothing about your account has changed. Check the operator's help pages before you assume otherwise.

Why the directory matters more than an ad
Search ads, global homepages and "best Canadian poker site" lists aren't the Ontario register. To find out whether a poker brand is in the regulated market today, open the iGaming Ontario directory. Our dated brand table is a reading aid, not a replacement.
As of the 1 September 2026 directory, poker is marked for six brands: BetMGM Poker, Bwin, PartyPoker, FanDuel Poker, GGPoker and 888 Poker. Bwin and PartyPoker are run by the same operator. That list can change, so check it again before you deposit.
A two-minute check before you sign up
- Find the exact brand name in the iGaming Ontario directory, not just the parent company.
- Check that the brand shows a poker category in the directory.
- Make sure you're 19 or older and have ID ready for account verification.
- Play only while you're physically in Ontario. If the location check fails, that's the system working, not a glitch to get around.
- Set a deposit limit before your first deposit.
If a poker site you're looking at isn't in the directory, it isn't part of Ontario's regulated market, whatever its homepage says. Whether and how other laws apply to a particular site is a legal question we can't answer for you.
Advertising is regulated too
Ontario restricts broad public advertising of bonuses, credits and other gambling inducements. That's why we don't lead with deposit-bonus tables, and why a loud promotion isn't evidence that a site is regulated.
