Why west-end players pick Mohawk
If you live in Milton, Halton or the west GTA, driving across Toronto for a $1/$3 game can eat an hour each way. Mohawk saves you that. It also does something most rooms don't: it posts the buy-in range right next to each game, so you know exactly what you need before you leave.
Mohawk makes the most sense if:
- you're west of Toronto and don't want to cross the GTA;
- you want $1/$3 or $2/$5 Hold'em;
- you understand the difference between capped and match-the-stack buy-ins (explained below);
- your trip falls Thursday through Sunday.
The schedule is the big catch
Unlike Toronto and Pickering, Mohawk is not published as a seven-day, 24-hour poker room. Poker runs Thursday to Sunday, noon to 4 a.m. Show up on a Tuesday and there's no game. Check the schedule before you leave, especially around holidays or if the room has made operational changes. If you can only play Monday to Wednesday, look at Brantford (daily hours) or Great Canadian Toronto (24/7) instead.
Getting on the list
The room points players to PokerAtlas or the phone. Check PokerAtlas to see what's running, then call to add your name. Registered players can be removed if they don't check in within the room's published window, so don't sign up from home and then stop for dinner. When you arrive, go to the poker desk, give your name, and let them know you're there.

The games, and what match-the-stack means
Standard capped games
$1/$3 No-Limit has a $100 to $300 buy-in. $2/$5 No-Limit has a $300 to $1,000 buy-in. These work the way most players expect: you can sit with any amount inside the range, and the maximum keeps everyone's starting stack in the same ballpark. At $1/$3, a max buy-in of $300 is 100 big blinds.
Match-the-stack games
$2/$3 match-the-stack has a $100 minimum. $3/$5 match-the-stack has a $300 minimum. In a match-the-stack game you can generally buy in for up to the size of the biggest stack at the table. So if someone at $2/$3 has run $100 up to $1,200, you could sit with $1,200 too. Check the room's exact rule when you sit down.
Why it matters: stacks in these games can get much deeper than the blinds suggest. A $2/$3 game with $1,000 stacks plays more like a bigger game than a $1/$3 game with $300 stacks. Don't choose purely from the blind label. Decide your maximum buy-in before you arrive, and don't let a big stack at the table talk you into more. The cash game buy-ins guide explains stack depth in more detail.
What your first session looks like
It's Saturday afternoon. You check PokerAtlas, see $1/$3 running, call to get on the list, and drive over. At the desk you check in, wait for your name, and sit with $200. That's inside the $100 to $300 band and leaves room for one rebuy within your budget.
Early on, a player opens to $12 and you look down at Q♥J♥ on the button. A call is reasonable. The flop is J♣8♦3♠, top pair with a decent kicker. You bet for value and get called by worse jacks and eights. Keep it simple for your first few hours. Live players call more than online players do, so value betting your good hands usually works better than bluffing.
