Great Canadian Toronto has the clearest published Omaha menu in the immediate Toronto market. Pickering also publishes an Omaha game. Omaha demand swings much more than entry-level Hold'em, so a room can list it without a table running at every hour. Check the live list or call before you make a dedicated trip.

The rule beginners get wrong

In Omaha you get four hole cards, but you must use exactly two of them with exactly three community cards to make your five-card hand. You can't play the board the way you sometimes can in Hold'em, and you can't use three or four of your own cards.

Two examples that catch people:

  • You hold A♥K♠Q♠J♦ and the board is 9♥8♥4♥2♥7♣. You have one heart. You need two from your hand, so you have no flush.
  • You hold 7♣7♦7♥2♠ and the board is K♠7♠4♦9♣2♦. You have a set of sevens, using two of your sevens. The third seven in your hand doesn't help you, and it means fewer sevens left for anyone else.

How pot-limit betting works

In Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO), the most you can bet or raise is the size of the pot. For a raise, the pot counts your call first. Say the pot is $20 and someone bets $20. You'd call $20, making the pot $60, then raise by $60, so the most you can raise to is $80. Dealers will help with the math. Just say "pot" and they'll tell you the amount.

What "½ Kill" means

A kill game raises the stakes for a hand when a trigger is hit, most commonly when one player wins two pots in a row or scoops a large pot. In a half kill, the stakes go up by half, so a $20/$40 game plays that hand at $30/$60, and the player who triggered it posts the kill blind. Rooms define their own triggers, so ask the dealer how it works at that table before your first hand.

Why PLO feels bigger

With four cards each, equities run much closer than in Hold'em. Big draws are common, pots go multiway and swings are larger. Pocket aces are nowhere near the favourite they are in Hold'em, and a hand that looks strong on the flop can easily be behind a wrap draw plus a flush draw. The blind level alone understates how large the game plays, so bring a bigger cushion than you would for the same blinds in Hold'em.

Know which Omaha you want

Pot-Limit Omaha, limit Omaha and Omaha hi-lo are different games with different betting structures and hand-selection ideas. When a venue just says "Omaha", check the exact variant and stakes before you travel.

Hold'em skills carry over only partly. Position, pot odds and range thinking still matter, but four hole cards create far more combinations and stronger average made hands. Top pair is usually a weak hand in PLO.
